Uncle Sam Collection
Uncle Sam Exhibit to Open this Summer at the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village

A colorful and distinctive display of patriotic memorabilia, personified in the image of Uncle Sam, will be exhibited during July and August at the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village (corner of New and Tonawanda Creek Roads) in Amherst, New York.

Sponsored by the Buffalo Presidential Center, this exhibition is part of the organization’s Richardson Family Collection. Individual items date from the early 1900s through 2000, and include unique folk art, prints, statues, ceramics, figurines and much more.

Viewers will gain an understanding of the history of Uncle Sam.  Come celebrate how he has developed into a popular symbol of American culture and a manifestation of patriotic emotion.

The Association for a Buffalo Presidential Center is hosting a lecture by the noted constitutional and political historian Paul Finkelman on the subject, “Millard Fillmore, the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, and Slave Hunting in New York.” The lecture will review Millard Fillmore’s political career, the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law, and President Fillmore’s aggressive enforcement of the law in northern states. A discussion will follow the lecture moderated by Michael Frisch, PHD Professor and Senior Research Fellow University at Buffalo (SUNY) and ABPC board member.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, December 3 at the 7:00 PM at the auditorium of the Buffalo History Museum, One Museum Court, near the corner of Elmwood and Nottingham Terrace.

Professor Finkelman, an Emeritus Professor of Law at Albany Law School, is currently a Senior Fellow at the Penn Program on Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism at the University of Pennsylvania and scholar-in residence at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. He is the author of many law review and historical journal essays and author or editor of over 40 books, including his 2011 biography, Millard Fillmore, which was published in Oxford University Press’s The American Presidents series.

Lincoln in Buffalo 150

Lincoln in Buffalo 150 commemorated the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train arriving in Buffalo. The train carried Lincoln’s body from Washington DC up the east coast to Albany and west to Springfield, Illinois. It arrived in Buffalo at 7:00 a.m. on April 27, 1865, where tens of thousands lined Main St. to view the hearse and procession. Nearly 100,000 solemnly passed his open casket in St. James Hall.
